The main goal of the present study was to analyse the relationship between childhood memories and representations relative to parenthood, considering the specific case of male inmates. The sample was composed by 252 participants mainly females (M=71.4%), aged between 18 and 72 years old (M = 28.32, DP = 9.82). An online data gathering survey was conducted, including tools such as a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Maternal Behavior Q-Sort (MBQS) and the Eggna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran (EMBU). The results have shown that women have more representations about what they consider to be an ‘ideal’ parenthood. Besides this, concerning the predictive role of childhood memories in negative parenthood representations of male inmates, the results lead us to believe that the childhood memories predict the negative representations regarding this group. More specifically, it was demonstrated that more father rejection memories predict more negative representations towards parenthood in male inmates and more mother rejection memories predict fewer negative representations regarding parenthood in male inmates. This study contributed to the production of scientific knowledge in a subject that is still quite unexplored, the social representations concerning parenthood in risk groups, with emphasis over male inmates. This knowledge brings implications at a social and professional practice level stressing the necessity to deconstruct and re(conceptualizing) the representations and even stereotypes that may exist towards parenting by male inmates.
