Structural health monitoring (SHM) has emerged as a research priority due to the constant aging of built heritage. Recent advances have demonstrated the applicability of SHM for timely and automatic damage detection. The operating principle of SHM is grounded in statistical pattern recognition, based on previous experience, to detect and diagnose damage in the monitored structure. Data acquired on similar structures, under both normal and damaged conditions, are used as a basis of comparison to classify new data coming from the monitored structure. However, in Civil Engineering structures, this process is hampered by the lack of access to data corresponding to damaged conditions (and/or uncommon operational conditions), which typically restricts SHM to outlier detection. This dissertation presents a hybrid approach to the classification of the structural condition of bridges, based on supervised training of machine learning algorithms, using monitoring data from the undamaged structure and numerical data corresponding to uncommon operational conditions and damage. The reinforced and prestressed concrete pedestrian crossing located next to the Lusófona University campus is used as a case study. The bridge was measured using point clouds, which secured its detailed three-dimensional representation. Finally, this study validates the App4SHM smartphone application to estimate natural vibration frequencies and analyze the structural condition of bridges.
