Perinatal mental health problems may hinder the accomplishment of developmental tasks during the transition to parenthood, interfering with the parental reflective functioning (PRF) – parents’ ability to understand the internal mental state of their child. However, little is known regarding the association between mental health problems and PRF during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to analyse the association between depressive and anxiety symptoms and PRF in pregnant women and to analyse the moderating role of parity in this association. A total of 117 pregnant women residing in Portugal and in the third trimester of pregnancy were recruited, 61.5% of which were primiparous. The main results show that depressive symptoms were significantly and negatively predictive of PRF, but anxiety symptoms were not significantly predictive of PRF. Results also show that parity does not moderate the association between depressive symptoms and PRF. This study concluded that depressive symptoms can negatively affect women’s PRF during pregnancy, and that early identification and reduction of depressive symptoms is essential to help prevent difficulties in PRF in the prenatal period and, consequently, in the postpartum period. Keywords: depression, anxiety, parental reflective functioning, pregnancy
