In the context of a globalized society, where travel for professional reasons is increasingly frequent, it becomes essential to understand the impact that physical distance has on the dynamics of couples facing this challenge. Within the scope of Family Psychology and drawing on the Systemic and Socioecological models, the present study aimed to analyze the levels of marital satisfaction, sexual satisfaction, and communication quality in individuals involved in long-distance relationships (LDR). It also sought to examine the extent to which these variables are interrelated, and whether there are differences in their levels based on gender, the regularity of reunions between the couple, the position that each partner occupies in the LDR, and whether they were together or apart at the time of completing the evaluation protocol. A cross-sectional quantitative research methodology was used, with a non probabilistic, convenience sample composed of 105 participants (39 men and 66 women), aged between 18 and 66 years, who are in an exclusive, heterosexual relationship, where one partner is geographically distant most days due to professional reasons. The instruments used were the Portuguese versions of the Couples Satisfaction Index – Short (CSI-4), the Global Measure of Sexual Satisfaction (GMSEX), the New Scale of Sexual Satisfaction (NSSS), and the Communication subscale of the ENRICH Inventory. Through correlation analysis (r), marital satisfaction, sexual satisfaction centered on the self, sexual satisfaction centered on the partner and on sexual activity, and communication quality were found to be positively and significantly associated with each other. A significant negative association was also found between global sexual satisfaction and sexual satisfaction centered on the partner. The comparison of two independent groups using the Student’s t-test revealed that men reported higher global sexual satisfaction than women, as did those who reunite with their partner more frequently. Participants who occupy the position of the partner who travels for work reported lower levels of sexual satisfaction centered on the partner and with sexual activity. No phenomena of marital or sexual idealization were observed, as expected. The results underscore the importance of effective communication strategies and the use of digital tools that allow for the maintenance of emotional and sexual connection in contexts of physical separation.
