The association between sexual functioning and sexual distress is well established and tens to be stronger in contexts of low intimacy. However, most studies have relied on individual samples, overlooking the dyadic nature of sexual experiences. Consequently, the moderating role of emotional and sexual intimacy at the couple level remains unexplored, a gap that the present study aims to address. This study included 143 dyads (N = 242 participants), aged between 18 and 55 years. The analyses followed a dyadic approach using the Actor–Partner Interdependence Model (APIM). The results revealed a significant actor effect, indicating that one’s own better sexual functioning was associated with lower levels of one’s own sexual distress. No partner effects were observed. Moderation analyses showed that the actor’s sexual and emotional intimacy functioned as protective factors, with the impact of sexual functioning on sexual distress being less pronounced in relationships with greater intimacy. No significant interpersonal effects were observed. These findings highlight the centrality of intrapersonal factors in sexual distress and underscore intimacy as a protective resource. Clinically, they suggest interventions that promote not only sexual functioning but also the quality of intimacy within the couple, as essential for relational and sexual well-being.
