Resumo
A Companhia Vinícola Portuguesa foi a primeira empresa a instalar-se no Areal do Prado no ano de 1899. A construção dos armazéns impulsionou a atividade industrial e a materialização de uma nova malha urbana em Matosinhos sul, que surgiu para responder à futura expansão da cidade numa altura em que estava a ser construído o Porto de Leixões. Pela proximidade ao porto, os terrenos do Areal do Prado mostravam-se favoráveis à instalação da indústria, a qual ocupou progressivamente o território até à segunda metade do século XX. A par da atividade produtiva, também o sector residencial se estendeu para a malha ortogonal de Matosinhos sul, que com o tempo se foi consolidando.
A análise da cartografia, e do levantamento fotográfico aéreo, permite perceber como o edifício evolui, e como resiste até ao século XXI - ao contrário da maior parte dos edifícios industriais, que entretanto desapareceram para dar lugar a outros usos.
A reutilização dos armazéns da Companhia Vinícola Portuguesa levanta questões metodológicas de intervenção, por se tratar de um edifício classificado - testemunho da história da cidade e da arquitetura industrial - numa cidade renovada e com novas dinâmicas.
A análise de casos de reconversão de áreas e edifícios industriais, permite refletir sobre os procedimentos adequados à intervenção na Companhia Vinícola Portuguesa, respondendo ao novo uso, e preservando os valores do edificado.
A sistematização critica da informação recolhida e dos casos de estudo analisados, justifica a eleição da metodologia de intervenção, a qual resulta da combinação de instrumentos teóricos e práticos, associados à definição programática do edifício e às necessidades de uso da cidade.
Pretende-se, através da valorização da especificidade documental, arquitetónica e significativa da Companhia Vinícola Portuguesa, devolver ao complexo industrial o seu papel impulsionador, e contribuir para uma nova dinâmica urbana.
Companhia Vinícola Portuguesa was the first company to settle down at Areal do Prado, in 1899. The construction of the building complex fostered the industrial activity and the materialisation of a new urban grid in southern Matosinhos, that appeared to respond to the city expansion, due to, amongst other reasons, the new Leixões harbour, that had been recently completed. The proximity between Areal do Prado and the harbour made the location appealing to industry, which began to flourish until the second half of the twentieth century. Along with productive activity, the residential sector also spread to the new grid, which in time began to consolidate. The analysis, through cartography and aerial photography, allowed us to understand how the building is located in the site, and how it remained until the twenty first century – unlike other industrial buildings that have disappeared so as to give place to other uses. The reuse of Companhia Vinícola Portuguesa´s industrial buildings raises questions regarding the intervention methodology, for it is a classified building – witness of the city’s history and its industrial architecture – in a renovated city with new dynamics. The analysis of case studies of industrial areas and building reconversions allows the reflection about adequate procedures regarding Companhia Vinícola’s intervention, which has to respond to its new use, taking the preservation of the building´s values into account. The critical review of the collected information and the analysis of the case studies support the choice of the intervention methodology, which results from the combination of theoretical and practical instruments, associated to the building´s new use and to the city’s functional necessity.
