A PES
Visual culture, where matters related to the power of images as a form of communication are addressed, especially in contemporary times, has strong connections to social issues. These topics are not only quite present in popular culture — in movies and tv shows, in company marketing, etc., they are also often used by artists in their projects. Possible ways of approaching social and environmental issues in art education, through the teaching paradigm of visual culture, are presented within this dissertation, as well as an analysis of the importance of the role of the school role in the global formation of students (considering the ‘skills for the education of the 21st century’ set by UNESCO, and the ‘students profile at the end of compulsory education’ envisioned by the Ministry of Education). This investigation was conducted using the action-research methodology, which allowed the combination of theoretical investigation with the pedagogical context of the supervised teaching practice. The STP took place throughout the 2021/2022 school year, at the High School of Carcavelos, with an 11th grade Drawing A class. Three didactic units were applied within the scope of this research linked to social issues of our days, such as: human identity and diversity, the preservation of the oceans and artistic activism in contemporary times. The results obtained from the collected data point to a greater awareness among students regarding the transforming role of the arts in society
