companhia no nosso país.
In Portugal, as far as we know, it is an original study and intends to contribute with scientific data, collected over seven months, in order to identify the main causes of abandonment or relinquishment of dogs and cats and thus identify tools to find solutions to the scourge of abandoned dogs and cats in our country. The adoption of dogs and cats as pets by humans has at least 10,000 years, being a phenomenon on a global scale and the most common practice of the various societies that once inhabited the world, being reported intense links between these species. It is even believed that it is one of the strongest relationships among species as different, with distinct impacts in terms of human social structure and on animal and public health. This study aims to identify the main causes of relinquishment of dogs and cats in the municipalities of Sintra and Cascais, of Lisbon District. In this context, a questionnaire was prepared and placed in adherent official collection centres and animal associations during seven months, having subsequently analysed the responses to 67 valid questionnaires. Of the main results we highlight that the women aged 25 to 40 years that do not own the animals were the group that most relinquished animals as well as people with schooling between 8th and 12th grade and with the lowest incomes (below of 6000 euros per year) and that the animals were delivered mainly neutered / spayed. The reason most often given for the relinquishment of animals was emigration, followed by financial problems, animal diseases and allergies in the family.
