contexto hospitalar e as clínicas.

Contextualization: The scientific opinion has been saying that the motivations and expectations of future psychologists and already-in-functions psychologists may influence their practice. Internationally, the investigations regarding the motivations and expectations leading to the choice of clinical psychology and specifically the practice of psychotherapy are increasing. Objective: The present study aims to understand the motivations and expectations of Portuguese college students regarding their choice of clinical psychology. Method: Was made a semi-structural interview to 12 undergraduate students in Psychology, which was made for this study. The interviews were transcribed, and the data was analyzed according to the thematic analysis approach and with the use of the Software Nvivo 10. Results: The results reveal that the expectations are the leading topic of the answers of the students. They refer their expectations on how they are going to be as clinical psychologists; the fact that they want to help people while they idealize the better version of themselves, in their future profession. Regarding the place where the students intend to work in the future, second most common topic, they mention hospital environment and clinic. On the subject about the motivations of their choice of following clinical psychologist, appear their previous experiences, especially when related with an old therapy procedure, as well as the perception that they have of themselves and how their characteristics could help to the good practice of their future vocation. Discussion: The motivations and expectations of the students do depend of their previous experiences, both family or school related. We concluded that most of the expectations of the students are well-informed and realistic, when compared to the studies. They seek information with their teachers or psychologists over the best therapy to adopt. Furthermore, the previous experiences, good personal characteristics for social and practice in the clinic are factors of motivation to these students, that choose clinical psychology. Keywords: motivations, expectations, psychology students, clinical psychology, thematic analyses
