(86%), a vitamina D e a creatina (84%).
D e creatina.
Background: In an increasingly demanding sports context and with increasingly demanding aesthetic standards socially speaking, the consumption of food supplements as an aid to the performance of athletes have increased by those who wish to improve their body composition. Objective: The main objective of this study is to characterize the consumption of AS and nutrition, as well as to assess nutritional knowledge in Portuguese cultures, understand the sources of indication or advice and the real importance of a specialized and trained professional for its prescription. Procedures: Fifty male bodybuilding practitioners aged between 20 and 43 years participated in this cross-sectional study, selected through a selection criterion of convenience. Participants answered a questionnaire on Google Forms, between May and June 2021, which contained questions on sociodemographic characterization, characterization of dietary supplement consumption and on general nutritional knowledge and on sports nutrition Results: The most used food supplements were whey protein (98%), omega-3 fatty acids (86%), vitamin D and creatine (84%). It was verified a higher level of general knowledge than about sports nutrition, in which less than half of the main answers answered correctly. Conclusion: Bodybuilders referred to taking a wide spectrum of dietary supplements, mainly whey protein, omega-3, vitamin D and creatine. The athletes' lack of knowledge evidenced in the results of this study may be the reason why this audience is more susceptible and vulnerable to marketing associated with the supplementation industry, reinforcing once again the need for monitoring by a professional specialized in nutrition.
