Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) consists of inhaling a high dose (100%) of oxygen under hyperbaric conditions, that is, inside a hyperbaric chamber and subject to a pressure greater than 1.4 ATA (6psi), knowing that till values of 3.0 ATA (29.4psi) is considered a safe therapy. The main objective of this study was to identify whether HBOT causes side effects in the patient and which ones. Thus, the minor and major side effects experienced during this therapy. This study also intended to record which etiologies had the highest and lowest prescription for hyperbaric oxygen therapy and to find guidelines for the treatment of these etiologies. To this end, a population sample of 50 patients (44 dogs and 6 cats) who underwent HBOT at the Centro de Reabilitação e Regeneração Animal de Lisboa was used. The results obtained revealed that HBOT is a well-accepted therapy for all patients and that the side effects observed never prevent it from being performed. It was also observed that the etiologies with the highest prescription are those of neurological, traumatic and metabolic origin, and that all benefit more from the use of elevated ATA. The results obtained revealed that HBOT is a well-accepted therapy for all patients, with 76% of them showing acceptance for the chamber. Regarding minor side effects (ESm), the highest percentages (42%) are related to yawning, swallowing and head shaking. The major side effects were limited to 2% of the animals that showed signs of barotrauma, never restraining therapy. The etiologies with the highest prescription were neurological (n = 29), traumatic (n = 14) and metabolic (n = 7), with best results shown after elevated ATA treatments, resulting on 64% (32/50) of the patients treated with ATA higher than 2,0. It was also proven that the average of ATA values presented a statistical significance tendency in relation to age (p = 0,087).en
