terapia analgésica no Brodleys Veterinary Hospital (Stirling, Escócia), no período
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and the number one cause of chronic pain in dogs. The increasing incidence and morbidity of this disease has made it a target for researchers to unveil its triggers and physiopathological mechanisms for a more individualized and efficient treatment as well as new profilactic strategies. The study aims to assess the percentage of dogs with osteoarthritic chronic pain that were non-responsive to a new analgesic therapy, to check the efficiency of the Helsinki Chronic Pain Index in detecting type II chronic pain, and to discern any identifiable pattern (sex, age, breed, body condition score, osteoarthritic body zone, etc) in these dogs. This work included a sample of 27 dogs diagnosed with osteoarthritis starting an analgesic therapy that were consulted at Broadleys Veterinary Hospital (Stirling, Scotland) between January and June of 2014. The diagnosis, medication and follow-ups was done by the Veterinary Surgeons responsible for each clinical case. To the best knowledge of the author this was the first study to apply the HCPI as a way to distinguish between Type I and Type II of chronic pain.
