The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence and the factors that affect the mental health of veterinarians. Additionally, this investigation aimed to identify and descriptively compare key elements that may positively or negatively influence professional quality of life. Using validated instruments such as the ProQOL5 and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), it was possible to identify risk indicators associated with burnout and compassion fatigue. These results revealed concerning levels of emotional exhaustion and fatigue, linked to factors such as dealing with clients' negative emotions (62,12%), patient loss (57,58%), low salaries (57,58%), communication of bad news (53,03%), and euthanasia (51,52%). Although the importance of emotional intelligence in the profession is undeniable, there is a significant lack of emotional support and specific training during both academic education and professional practice. This suggests that most veterinarians do not have adequate strategies to manage the emotional demands of their profession, which ultimately compromises their mental health and quality of life. In conclusion, integrating emotional intelligence into veterinary academic curriculum and work environments is essential to meet the challenges of the profession.en
