dc.description.abstractA presente dissertação tem como tema a violência exercida sobre as pessoas idosas, focando os maus tratos que lhes são infligidos, muitas vezes no seio da sua própria família. A parte prática deste trabalho debruça-se sobre a realidade desta temática vivida na ilha de São Tomé, onde os maus tratos aos idosos são uma constante, e partiu do estudo realizado pela mestranda, que se ali se deslocou e onde permaneceu cerca de um mês. A pergunta de partida que serviu de fio condutor ao longo de todo o processo de investigação foi a seguinte: Quais as principais causas que concorrem para a existência de maus tratos aos idosos na ilha de São Tomé? Os objetivos foram definidos tendo em conta a pretensão de aprofundar o conhecimento existente sobre os maus tratos infligidos aos idosos, bem como o seu abandono pelas próprias famílias, naquela ilha. Assim, tentou-se caraterizar o fenómeno dos Maus Tratos aos Idosos na ilha de São Tomé, bem como o perfil das famílias e dos idosos que são maltratados e abandonados. Tentou-se igualmente compreender até que ponto existe uma relação entre idosos maltratados e determinadas crenças socioculturais que levam os familiares dos mais velhos a infligirem-lhes maus tratos. Para tal, optou-se por uma metodologia qualitativa, tendo-se desenvolvido um estudo de caso, onde se utilizaram técnicas de pesquisa documental e bibliográfica, e de observação (direta e participante). Recorreu-se igualmente à aplicação de entrevistas semiestruturadas a uma amostra de 8 idosos institucionalizados. Para complementar foram também entrevistadas 4 Técnicas de várias instituições sociais e foi ainda aplicada uma entrevista ao Bispo de São Tomé. Depois da realização das entrevistas procedeu-se à análise e interpretação de dados, apresentando-se no final os respetivos resultados, onde podemos concluir que as diversas fontes de evidência indicam a existência de maus tratos aos idosos na ilha de São Tomé e que os mesmos são derivados da situação de extrema pobreza em que estas pessoas vivem, sendo também possível perceber que o aumento do número de idosos pobres os torna mais vulneráveis ao abandono e à solidão.pt
dc.description.abstractpresent master thesis has as its main theme the violence exerted on the elderly, focusing on the ill-treatment that is inflicted on them, often within their own family. The practical part of this work focuses on the reality of this situation lived on the island of São Tomé, where the mistreatment of the elderly is a constant, and started from the study carried out by the master's student, who went there and remained in the country around one month. The starting question that served as a guiding thread throughout the investigation process was the following: What are the main causes that contribute to the existence of mistreatment of the elderly on the island of São Tomé? The objectives were defined taking into account the intention to deepen the existing knowledge about the mistreatment inflicted on the elderly, as well as their abandonment by the families themselves, on that island. Thus, an attempt was made to characterize the phenomenon of elderly abuse on the island of São Tomé, as well as the profile of families and the elderly who are mistreated and abandoned. We also tried to understand the extent to which there is a relationship between mistreated elderly and certain sociocultural beliefs that lead family members of the elderly to inflict abuse on them. A qualitative methodology was chosen for these propose, and a case study was developed, using techniques of documentary and bibliographic research, and observation (direct and participant). Semi-structured interviews were also applied to a sample of 8 institutionalized elderly. In addition, a set of 4 techniques from various institutions were also interviewed and an interview was also applied to the Bishop of São Tomé. After the interviews were conducted, data analysis and interpretation were performed, with the respective results being presented at the end, where we can conclude that the various sources of evidence indicate the existence of ill-treatment of the elderly on the island of São Tomé and that they are derived from the situation of extreme poverty in which these people live, and it is also possible to perceive that the increase in the number of poor elderly people makes them more vulnerable to abandonment and loneliness.en
