Art education plays an important role in students’ integral formation due to the abilities it promotes. This recognition is reflected in the relevance that visual arts have been assuming in the national curriculum. In this dissertation several intrinsic visions to arts teaching are described, such as disciplinebased art education; visual culture and the promotion of critical thinking; creative expression associated with problem-solving; and the arts contribution to cognitive development. As children mature, their graphic expression develops until they reach adolescence. This is a troubled phase where both physical and psychological transformations happen at the same time. More aware of their potentialities and limitations, adolescents often show a lack of interest in graphic expression, so art education becomes crucial and teachers play a decisive role. They should create in their students an appetite to learn, stimulate their creativity and autonomy and use positive feedback so that they develop cognitive abilities and acquire new skills. These objectives guided my pedagogical practice as a trainee teacher of Visual Education at the D. António da Costa Basic School in Almada. Having chosen to develop a didactic unit on the representation of the face and the human figure, I applied the research – action methodology for the monitoring of my pedagogical practice in both 8th grade classes that I taught. Two questionnaires were carried out to the students, one before and one after the didactic unit. Based on the first questionnaire, I was able to create a plan that would meet their interests. Diversified activities were proposed to encourage students to express themselves using different techniques and materials. The second questionnaire allowed me to verify that my goals were achieved, because most of the students liked the activities they carried out and began to give more value to the discipline of Visual Education.
