PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Arquitetura Tradicional Japonesa Movimento Moderno Europeu, Mies van der Rohe, Dinâmicas Culturais, Pioneiros do Movimento Moderno
This dissertation analyzes the impact of traditional Japanese culture and related "oriental" concepts on the architecture of the European modern movement, using the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe as a framework. The study is divided into three chapters, the first of which discusses the dynamics of the relationship between Europe and Japan, showing the availability of information on Japanese architecture in Europe from the mid-19th century to the beginning of the Second World War, with references to academic exchanges, publications and international exhibitions. Subsequently, the history, spatial conception and values and principles of Japanese architecture are shown, in order to understand how the Japanese perceive the physical world and its psychological dimension differently from the West. Mies' work is then considered in the light of the available material. Although critics often mention similarities between his architecture and Japanese precedents, few make direct connections. However, consideration of the context in which his activities took place reveals the availability of significant material relating to the philosophical and conceptual foundations of Japanese architecture, and it is argued that diverse forms of expression are found in his work. KEYWORDS: Traditional Japanese Architecture European Modern Movement, Mies van der Rohe, Cultural Dynamics, Pioneers of the Modern Movement.
