This report concerns on action research within the scope of a professional internship that took place at Escola Secundária de Sá da Bandeira, in Santarém, in the 2022/23 academic period. The supervised internship followed the educational experience carried out with a 9th grade class, in the subject of Visual Education, through the teaching unit “Reinterpretation of Works of Art by Pablo Picasso”, with the aim of students having direct contact with works of art, namely the approach to content related to Modern Art and Contemporary Art. With the aim of developing a different teaching unit from what the students were used to, motivating strategies were implemented in order to develop their autonomy, such as diverse and creative teaching materials and a school trip to the Museu de Arte Contemporânea (CCB) with the purpose of inspiring the students about the topic. Using the chosen work of art and each one’s personal reinterpretation as a reference, the students produced their own project in the classroom, with the support and material of their choice. This dissertation begins with a theoretical framework, where the following themes are studied: the importance of visual arts in the teaching and learning process; the paradigm of artistic education: expressive-psychoanalytic model; the context of the developing child; contact with works of art as a resource in the classroom; learning and motivation; education and autonomy. It was possible to assess, through data collection, that the strategies contributed to cultural enrichment and motivation and provided a significant increase in autonomy of students. They also developed skills in reading works of art, acquired knowledge about modern and contemporary art, and developed their aesthetic sense and creativity. Keywords: Works of Art, Motivation, Autonomy, Visual Arts
