Esta dissertação de mestrado explora a possibilidade de projetar uma arquitetura que se desenvolva harmoniosamente no contexto de intervenção, através da manipulação da topografia e do diálogo com a envolvente. O meio natural converte-se numa peça fundamental de projeto, gerando uma multiplicidade de conceitos e ideias. A “ocultação”, que propõe uma relação fluída entre o edifício e a paisagem, é definida como o conceito chave desta reflexão. A análise da topografia é fundamental, no projeto de arquitetura, particularmente em parcelas com variação significativa de cotas. No entanto esta dissertação destaca a topografia não como um obstáculo, mas como uma ferramenta fundamental para conceber projetos que respeitem e valorizem o contexto natural. Apresentam-se duas abordagens distintas ao contexto natural e à topografia, ilustrando-as através de duas obras de Frank Lloyd Wright. Assume-se a “ocultação” como a abordagem a desenvolver neste trabalho, apresentando, de seguida, as diferentes estratégias que esta possibilita, através de uma análise de diferentes projetos em diversos países e períodos temporais. Por fim, apresenta-se a proposta de intervenção no terreno da antiga Fábrica do Gás do Porto, fundamentando-a na recriação da topografia pré-existente, fundindo o complexo de piscinas na paisagem natural, através do uso de formas curvas e de uma materialização fluída e flexível, alinhada com os princípios de uma arquitetura “oculta”. This dissertation explores the possibility of architecture that is in harmony with its context, through manipulation of topography and dialogue with the surroundings. The natural environment becomes a fundamental part of design, generating multiplicity of concepts and ideas. “Hiddenness”, which proposes a fluid relationship between building and landscape, is the key concept of this reflection. The analysis of topography is fundamental in architectural design, especially in plots with significant variations of relief. Yet, this dissertation highlights topography not as an obstacle, but as an essential tool for designing projects that respect and reinforce the natural context. Two distinct approaches to the natural context and topography are presented and illustrated with two buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Hiddenness, is elected as the approach to be developed in this research, addressing the strategies it offers, through the analysis of different projects in various countries and time periods. Finally, the project for the former Gas Factory of Porto is presented. The design is based on recreating the pre-existing topography, aiming to harmoniously blend the swimming pool complex and the natural landscape. This is achieved by using curved forms and a fluid, flexible approach, aligned with the principles of hidden architecture. Keywords: topography, hiddenness, landscape, architecture;
