Paraíba, a qual utiliza duas formas: vestibular tradicional e Processo Seletivo
Seriado (PSS).
This study is dedicated to an analysis of the selection process for entry into Brazilian Universities and, in particular, that carried out by the Federal University of Paraiba for which two distinct forms are used: the traditional entrance exam and the Selective Serial Process (PSS). The PSS and, specifically, the mathematics exams, constitute the central interest of this research whose goal is to investigate the opinion of teachers with respect to the contents included, the degree of difficulty demanded and the applicability of the National Curricular Parameters in these exams. The research can be classified as an exploratory descriptive. The subjects are the mathematics teachers from public and private schools which offer secondary education in the city of João Pessoa. The results indicate that the National Curricular guidelines were not observed with respect to contents, skills and competencies which served as the framework for evaluating the performance of secondary school students in the solution of mathematical problems with different degrees of difficulty. We consider that the privileged contents continue to be those determined by the entrance exam commission in its manual containing guidelines for the candidates.
