Impacto da intervenção veterinária e zootécnica na produção ovina : caso de estudo

Abstract

O presente trabalho visa descrever e refletir sobre as intervenções veterinárias e zootécnicas realizadas numa exploração de ovinos em regime extensivo, no interior do Baixo Alentejo, Concelho de Almodôvar, durante cerca de quatro anos, levando à melhoria nos índices produtivos e reprodutivos, contribuindo positivamente na aprendizagem e desenvolvimento pessoal e profissional do autor. A alteração implementada na raça dos machos da exploração para cruzamentos de crossbreeding entre fêmeas tipo Merino e machos Charolês, teve como objetivo melhorar os índices produtivos e reprodutivos do efetivo, melhoria de conformação de carcaças e ganho médio diário nos borregos para abate, prolificidade e diminuir os casos de distócias nas fêmeas reprodutoras. As intervenções levadas a cabo incluíram, redução e seleção do efetivo animal, melhoria de instalações e parques, registo de informações da exploração, implementação de alteração a nível nutricional e suplementação com base na condição corporal e estado reprodutivo dos animais, aplicação de plano sanitário como prevenção e controlo de patologias, e ainda um maneio reprodutivo cuidado e atento, permitiram a obtenção de melhores reprodutores, lotes de borregos mais homogéneos, facilitando assim a venda de borregos para abate e ainda a venda de animais destinados à reprodução a preços mais elevados. Este trabalho demonstra que através do registo e controlo da informação duma exploração pecuária, aplicação de conhecimentos médico-veterinários e técnicos sobre os diferentes fatores que afetam a produção dos ovinos, se torna possível aumentar a produção e assim alcançar melhores resultados. A reflexão sobre as intervenções feitas é uma ferramenta poderosa para a aprendizagem e ganho de confiança do Médico Veterinário.

This work aims to describe and reflect upon veterinary and zootechnical interventions made in an enterprise of extensively farmed sheep, in the heart of Baixo Alentejo, Municipality of Almodôvar (Portugal), during a period of four years. This study lead to the improvement of productive and reproductive rates, but also greatly contributed to the learning process, personal and professional growth of the author. Changes implemented regarding crossbreeding between Merino females and Charollais males, were made in order to improve the productive and reproductive indexes of the flock, as well as to improve conformation, meat quality and average daily gain in the lambs destined for slaughter. It also allowed for improvement in prolificacy and the reduction in the cases of dystocia in the breeding females. Interventions carried out included, reduction and selection of livestock, improvement of facilities and parks, recording of farm information, implementation of changes in nutritional level and supplementation based on the body condition and reproductive status of animals, application of health plan as prevention and control of pathologies, as well as careful and attentive breeding management, allowed the obtaining of better breeders, batches of lambs that are more homogenous, which facilitates the selling of lambs for slaughter and the sale of animals intended for breeding ate higher prices. This work demonstrates that through the registration and control of the information on a flock, application of medical and technical knowledge about the several factors that affect sheep production, it is possible to increase the production and therefore obtain better results. Reflection on the interventions performed is a powerful tool for the veterinarian's learning and confidence gain.
