dc.description.abstractEsta dissertação de mestrado foi realizada no âmbito da unidade curricular de Estágio, do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Veterinária da Universidade Lusófona. Assume a forma de relatório de estágio e casos clínicos, tendo como objetivo o desenvolvimento do tema Giardia spp. em cães e gatos. Encontra-se dividida em três partes, uma descrição da casuística observada no estágio curricular realizado na clínica veterinária "Veterinário da Vila", uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o tema e por último, a descrição de três casos clínicos relativos ao tema da dissertação. A giardíase define-se como sendo uma das principais doenças que afetam os animais a nível intestinal. Ganha também uma grande relevância, pela Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) pois é considerada uma zoonose (doenças infeciosas transmissíveis direta ou indiretamente entre animais e humanos.). No caso da Giardia duodenalis é a principal espécie que afeta os animais domésticos. A sua transmissão é realizada por via fecal-oral, ou seja, o ciclo do parasita inicia-se com a ingestão de quistos eliminados pelas fezes de outros cães ou gatos portadores. Por norma, os cistos infetados resistem mais tempo quando se encontram ambientes húmidos ou na água. Este parasita tem a capacidade de provocar episódios como diarreia aguda intermitente tanto em humanos como em animais. A Giardíase é muito comum em locais com muita densidade animal, como canis e estabelecimentos onde se realiza a criação e venda de canídeos e felídeos. dc.description.abstractThis master’s degree dissertation was carried out within the Internship curriculum unit of the Integrated Master's Degree in Veterinary Medicine of Universidade Lusófona. It takes the form of an internship report and clinical cases, with the objective of developing the theme Giardiasis in dogs and cats. It is divided into three parts, a description of the casuistry observed in the curricular internship carried out at the veterinary clinic “Veterinário da Vila”, a bibliographic review on the subject and, last but not least, the description of three clinical cases related to the subject of the dissertation. Giardiasis is defined as one of the main diseases that affect animals at the intestinal level. It also gains a great relevance by the World Health Organization (WHO) because it is considered a zoonosis (infectious diseases transmissible directly or indirectly between animals and humans). In the case of Giardia duodenalis is the main species that affects domestic animals. Its transmission is carried out by the fecal-oral route, i.e., the parasite cycle begins with the ingestion of cysts eliminated by the feces of other carrier dogs or cats. In general, infected cysts resist longer when they are in humid environments or in water. This parasite has the ability to cause episodes such as acute intermittent diarrhea in both humans and animals. Giardiasis is very common in places with high animal density, such as kennels and establishments where the breeding and sale of canids and felids takes place.
