In this paper we study the translation of Voltaire’s Candide into hungarian by focusing on some mechanisms which serv to express the irony by using textual signs of irony like union of paradoxical terms, binaric system, rhythm accelerando or ellipsis of causes. It is argued that during the translation process these marks are adapted to suit the linguistic properties of the target language by means of mechanisms such as completion, replacement and adjunction of morphems.
