Recetividade do uso de terapias complementares na medicina veterinária em Portugal

Em analogia com a Saúde Humana, o recurso a abordagens terapêuticas complementares tem vindo a aumentar exponencialmente em todo o mundo nos cuidados de saúde animal. Porém, ainda existe um olhar preconceituoso e discriminativo que impede o uso dos seus benefícios e vantagens na prática clínica veterinária.
O objetivo principal deste estudo é a avaliação, de um modo geral, da posição e perspetiva atual tanto da sociedade portuguesa, bem como da corrente e futura classe médico-veterinária sobre o uso de terapias complementares na clínica veterinária, nomeadamente a Medicina Física e de Reabilitação e a Acupuntura. Assim, para cada uma das amostras, procedeu-se à divulgação de um inquérito durante um período de 4 meses por via manual e das redes sociais, tendo-se obtido 1034, 104 e 303 respostas da sociedade em geral, da classe médico-veterinária e dos alunos de Medicina Veterinária, respetivamente.
Através dos resultados constatou-se em todas as amostras que a maioria dos inquiridos acreditam na eficácia do uso destas técnicas na medicina veterinária. A falta de evidência científica e o valor económico continuam a ser os motivos pela existência de uma vasta restrição do seu uso pela sociedade. Além disso, a grande maioria dos inquiridos apenas teve conhecimento da sua aplicação na prática veterinária por uma fonte diferente do Médico Veterinário (MV), uma vez que estes evidenciam um escasso conhecimento das suas bases e em consequência não referenciam como opção terapêutica. Os dados obtidos também sugerem que os alunos de medicina veterinária duvidam frequentemente do valor destas técnicas pelo baixo grau de conhecimento que têm sobre estas.
Desta forma, é possível constatar que o uso de terapias complementares na prática veterinária tem vindo a ser aceite por todos os elementos na sociedade, mas negligenciada, muitas vezes, pela atual e futura comunidade médico-veterinária.
In analogy with Human Health, the use of complementary therapeutic approaches has been increasing exponentially throughout the world in animal health care. However, there is still a prejudiced and discriminatory view that prevents the use of its benefits and advantages in veterinary clinical practice. The main objective of this study is to evaluate, in a general way, the current position and perspective of both Portuguese society as well as the current and future medical-veterinary class of the use of complementary therapies in the veterinary clinic, namely Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and to Acupuncture. Thus, for each of the samples, a survey was carried out during a period of 4 months by manual and social networks, and 1034, 104 and 303 responses from society in general were obtained from the medical-veterinary class and Veterinary Medicine students, respectively. Through the results it was observed in all the samples that the majority of respondents believe in the effectiveness of the use of these techniques in veterinary medicine. Lack of scientific evidence and broad economic value continue to be the reasons for the still existence of a vast restriction of its use by society. In addition, the vast majority of respondents were only aware of their application in veterinary practice by a divergent source of MV, since they show little knowledge of their bases and therefore do not refer as a therapeutic option. The data also suggest that veterinary students often doubt the value of these techniques because of the low level of knowledge they have about them. In this way, it can be seen that the use of complementary therapies in veterinary practice has been accepted by all elements in society, but neglected, often by the current and future veterinary community.
