A adolescência
prevalentes comorbilidades associadas à obesidade nestas idades.

Physical activity (PA) is associated with benefits in the physical and mental health, being important in the prevention and treatment of some diseases. Knowing its benefits, it is essential to implement strategies to encourage this behavior from an early age, enhancing its continuity in adult life. Adolescence can represent a critical period in the adoption of health behaviors including PA behavior. This dissertation aims to: (i) explore the importance and effectiveness of PA and physical exercise (Ex) in the health of adolescents with overweight or obesity, their follow-up in the Pediatric Obesity Consultation, Hospital de Santa Maria, Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte (HSM, CHULN); (ii) analyze the association between PA and insulin resistance (IR), one of the most prevalent obesity-related comorbidities at these ages. It was performed a brief review of Systematic Literature Reviews (SLR), an Original Investigation and an Internship Report regarding the work carried out in the Pediatric Obesity Consultation, HSM, CHULN. The brief review included SLR with relevant information about the association between PA/Ex and IR in adolescents with overweight or obesity, through a literature search carried out in PubMed (NCBI) database. The Original Research included 71 participants followed for 6 months, previously recruited for a weight management program. According to the brief SLR review, Ex is effective in improving IR, being combined training (CT), i.e., aerobic training + resistance training, the type of training with the best results in the treatment of IR in adolescents with overweight or obesity. These results are in line with the Original Investigation, which suggests that Ex type may be more important than PA levels per se, in IR treatment. In this study, an inverse association was also observed between IR and the body mass index (BMI) z-score (H=11.290, p=.010), as well as with the waist-to-height ratio (H= 13.744, p= .003). The Internship Report highlights the importance of the Exercise Physiologist´s role in obesity treatment and related comorbidities, such as IR, by promoting PA/Ex. CT seems to be the type of training with the best results in the treatment of IR. Keywords: Physical activity, Exercise, Overweight, Obesity, Adolescents, Insulin Resistance
