Avaliação do estalão racial como ferramenta de seleção de raças caninas criadas em Portugal com base no seu comportamento/temperamento

O comportamento canino desempenha um papel fundamental no apoio à díade Ser Humano-cão funcional. Porém, os traços de temperamento das raças caninas nem sempre são considerados na escolha da mesma. O estalão racial é a descrição oficialmente publicada pela Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) das caraterísticas morfológicas e comportamentais de cada raça canina. Neste trabalho pretendeu-se caraterizar o temperamento de raças caninas criadas em Portugal e avaliar se a descrição do estalão reflete os traços temperamentais obtidos. Recorreu-se ao questionário Canine Behavioral Assessment & Research Questionnaire (CBARQ), composto por 78 questões a avaliar numa escala de frequência ou intensidade de 5 pontos, originalmente validado por Duffy & Serpell, e posteriormente adaptado à população portuguesa por Rute Canejo-Teixeira. Foram analisados questionários referentes a 89 cães de 15 raças diferentes, com base nos comportamentos dos últimos 3 meses. Os resultados revelaram que nenhum dos estalões raciais descrevem a totalidade das caraterísticas comportamentais espelhadas nos resultados obtidos através do C-BARQ, frisando que a informação atualmente refletida nos estalões analisados não deve ser referência para a escolha de traços de temperamento da raça, podendo culminar no desenvolvimento de díades Ser Humano-cão disfuncionais. Canine behaviour plays a fundamental role in supporting a functional human-dog dyad. However, the temperament traits of dog breeds are not always considered when choosing a breed. The breed standard is the description officially published by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) of the morphological and behavioural characteristics of each dog breed. The aim of this study was to characterize the temperament of dog breeds bred in Portugal and to assess whether the description in the standard reflects the temperamental traits obtained. The Canine Behavioral Assessment & Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) was used, consisting of 78 questions to be evaluated on a 5-point frequency or intensity scale, originally validated by Hsu & Serpell, and later adapted to the Portuguese population by Rute Canejo-Teixeira. Questionnaires were analyzed for 89 dogs of 15 different breeds, based on their behaviour over the last 3 months. The results revealed that none of the breed standards describe all the behavioural characteristics reflected in the results obtained through the CBARQ, highlighting that the information currently reflected in the analyzed standards should not be a reference for choosing the breed's temperament traits, and could culminate in development of dysfunctional human-dog dyads.
