Estudo retrospetivo sobre as principais patologias e a prevalência de extrusões discais em cães da raça bulldog francês e a importância do tratamento com acupuntura

A extrusão dos discos intervertebrais, é uma das principais enfermidades a nível neurológico em Bulldogs Franceses. Os discos intervertebrais encontram-se entre as vertebras da coluna vertebral, à exceção da articulação entre Atlas (C1) e Axis (C2) e as vertebras sacrais e têm como função o amortecimento de impactos entre elas. Nas raças condrodistróficas, das quais a raça Bulldog Francês faz parte, existe uma maior predisposição para a extrusão dos discos intervertebrais, secundaria à doença degenerativa dos discos intervertebrais. Não havendo até ao presente momento, uma quantidade relevante de estudos que incidam sobre a extrusão dos discos intervertebrais em Bulldogs Franceses e de como é que a acupuntura pode ser importante para o tratamento desta afeção, procedeu-se um levantamento das fichas clínicas de 100 cães da raça Bulldog Francês, diagnosticados no local de estágio, a fim de se perceber qual a frequência desta afeção e dos tratamentos feitos com acupuntura nestes cães. Verificou-se que a afeção com maior prevalência foi a extrusão dos discos intervertebrais (lesões de Hansen tipo 1) na região cervical (46,48%), seguida da região lombar (38,03%) e que os discos onde a afeção é mais prevalente, encontram-se entre as vertebras cervicais 3 e 4 (36,36%) e as vertebras cervicais 2 e 3 (30,30%). Além disso, foi percetível também, que a acupuntura foi utilizada recorrentemente em todos os animais com esta afeção, tratados no local de estágio. A acupuntura é uma técnica da medicina tradicional chinesa, baseada nos conceitos de energia vital e o equilíbrio de Yin e Yang, sendo que quando ocorre um desequilíbrio entre estes, existe uma alteração do fluxo da energia vital, que por sua vez, dará origem a uma enfermidade. A técnica tem como objetivo repor o equilíbrio de Yin e Yang e o fluxo de energia vital, a fim de tratar a enfermidade causada pelo desequilíbrio destas forças. Demonstrou-se também que acupuntura com agulha seca, laser ou eletroacupuntura, pode ter um importante papel no tratamento de extrusões dos discos intervertebrais, por permitir a diminuição da utilização de analgésicos e anti-inflamatórios, tendo a capacidade de potenciar o efeito destes fármacos. The extrusions of intervertebral discs are one of the main neurological disorders in French Bulldogs. The intervertebral discs are found between the vertebrae of the vertebral column, except the connection between Atlas (C1), Axis (C2) and the sacral vertebrae, and their function is to cushion impacts between them. Chondrodystrophic breeds, which the French Bulldog breed is a part of, have a greater predisposition to extrusion of intervertebral discs, secondary to degenerative disease of intervertebral discs. There is currently, a small amount of relevant studies that deal with the extrusion of intervertebral discs in French Bulldogs and how acupuncture can be important for the treatment of this condition. Therefore, a survey was carried out on clinical records of 100 dogs, of the French Bulldog breed, diagnosed at the place of the internship, in order to understand the frequency of this condition and the treatments carried out with acupuncture in these dogs. It was found that the condition with the highest prevalence was the intervertebral disc extrusion (Hansen type 1 injuries) in the cervical region (46.48%), followed by the lumbar region (38.03%) and that the discs where the condition is most prevalent, are found between cervical vertebrae 3 and 4 (36.36%) and cervical vertebrae 2 and 3 (30.30%). In addition, it was also noticeable that acupuncture was used recurrently in all animals with this condition, treated at the internship site. Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine technique, based on the concepts of vital energy and the balance of Yin and Yang, which the imbalance induces a change of vital energy flux and cause illness. The technique aims to restore the balance of Yin and Yang and the flow of vital energy, in order to treat the illness caused by the imbalance of these forces. It was also shown that acupuncture with dry needle, laser or electroacupuncture may play an important role in the treatment of intervertebral disc extrusions, as it allows a decrease in the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatories, having the ability to potentiate the effect of these drugs.
