Item The Experience of the Religious through Silent Moving Image and the Silence of Bill Viola's Passions(FCT, 01/06/2009) Gil, InêsWith the creationof the moving image at the end of the 19th century a new way of representing and expressing the Religious was born. The cinema industry rapidly understood that film has a powerful way to attract new audiences and transformed the explicit religious message into an implicit theological discourse of the fictional film. Today, the concept of "cinema" needs to be rethought and expanded, as well as the notion of "tTranscendental" since the strong reality effect of the film can allow a true religious experience for the spectator.Item The potential of digital interactive television for the provision of healthcare and wellness services(12/12/2012) Sequeira, Ágata; Baptista, André; Quico, Célia; Damásio, Manuel JoséThe potential of digital interactive television (iDTV) to promote original services, formats and contents that can be relevant to support personal health care and wellness of individuals, namely elderly people, has not been yet fully explored in the past. Therefore, in a context of rapid change of the technological resources, in which the distribution and presentation of content comes associated with new platforms (such as digital terrestrial TV and IPTV), it is important to perceive the configurations that are being developed for interactive digital TV (iDTV) that may result in relevant outcomes within the field of healthcare and wellness, with the aim of offering complementarity to the existing services and contents made available today via the traditional means and media. This article describes and discusses the preliminary results of the first part of the research project iDTV-HEALTH: Inclusive services to promote health and wellness via digital interactive television. These first results suggest that iDTV solutions may represent a real contribution to delivery healthcare and wellness to the target population, namely as a supplement to health services provision.Item e-Health and Health literacy: a revision of research methods(12/12/2012) Damásio, Manuel José; Mackert, MichaelE-health provides powerful tools to improve health, but users’ health literacy – their ability to obtain, process, and act appropriately on health information – plays a role in their ability to make the most of e-health applications. This project reviewed research focused on e-health and health literacy, coding 94 articles to provide an overview of the field including use of theory and research methods. Findings indicate a lack of theory and use of established health literacy measures.Item A atmosfera fílmica como consciência(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2002) Gil, InêsThe concept of "cinematic atmosphere" is complex because its analysis raises the problem of the cinematographic formal construction as inductive medium of the film atmosphere. Moreover, the proper notion of "atmosphere" reveals other concepts more or less controlled by the cinematic elements that will have all the same goal: the recognition of these concepts through the manifestation of the atmosphere.Item Seeing films: audiences reaction to local cultural products(LCC, 2007) Damásio, Manuel JoséThis paper discusses the results of a large survey conducted in 2006 on the perception Portuguese movies’ audiences have of their own locally produced films. Audience’s reception of locally produced films is marked by the rejection of the consumption of these objects as a result of a bias against locally produced cultural artefacts. The prejudice shaping this relationship, not only demands for new cultural and social politics, but also raises a number of questions on local and European media industry’s ability to cope with its own audiences’ expectations. Finally, broader considerations are made on the different ways contemporary audiences are shaping media technologies, and their respective cultural artefacts, through their own use and reception of those technologies and artefacts. Item Competency management articulation for human resources(Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, 2008) Teodósio, FernandoIn recent years the approach to competences has gained great popularity due to process and organizational reengineering need. Taking opportunity on some recent work in this area dealing challenges that human resources face to develop planning training, I intend to identify several guidelines to develop a future architecture in a practical implementation. At this article is presented the concept development of competency management. Item Realism in Gameplay: Digital Fiction and Embodiment(ACM - Association for Computing Machinery, 2009) Luz, Filipe Costa; Damásio, Manuel José; Gouveia, PatríciaIn this article we argue that digital simulations promote and explore complex relations between the player and the machines cybernetic system with which it relates through gameplay, that is, the real application of tactics and strategies used by participants as they play the game. We plan to show that the realism of simulation, together with the merger of artificial objects with the real world, can generate interactive empathy between players and their avatars. In this text, we intend to explore augmented reality as a means to visualise interactive communication projects. With ARToolkit, Virtools and 3ds Max applications, we aim to show how to create a portable interactive platform that resorts to the environment and markers for constructing the games scenario. Many of the conventional functions of the human eye are being replaced by techniques where images do not position themselves in the traditional manner that we observe them (Crary, 1998), or in the way we perceive the real world. The digitalization of the real world to a new informational layer over objects, people or environments, needs to be processed and mediated by tools that amplify the natural human senses.Item Combining the rational and relational perspectives of electronic trading(The Operational Research Society, 2009) Redondo, Eduardo; Daniel, Elizabeth; Ward, JohnMany organisations make extensive use of electronic linkages to facilitate their trading exchanges with partners such as suppliers, distributors and customers. This research explores how the use of inter-organisational systems (IOS) both affects, and is affected by, the relationships between trading partners. In doing this, it brings together two existing but distinct perspectives and literatures; the rational view informed by IOS research, and the behavioural or relationship perspective embodied in inter-organisational relationships (IOR) literature. The research was undertaken in the European paper industry by means of six dyadic case studies. The dyads studied covered both traditional electronic data interchange systems and newer e-marketplace environments. A framework was derived from existing literature that integrates the two perspectives of interest. The framework was used to analyse the case studies undertaken and enabled the inter-relationship between IOS use and IOR to be explained.Item Robosonic: Randomness-Based Manipulation of Sounds Assisted by Robots(Springer, 2009) Luz, Filipe Costa; Bila, Vasco; Jorge, RuiIn this text, we intend to explore the possibilities of sound manipulation in a context of augmented reality (AR) through the use of robots. We use the random behaviour of robots in a limited space for the real-time modulation of two sound characteristics: amplitude and frequency. We add the possibility of interaction with these robots, providing the user the opportunity to manipulate the physical interface by placing markers in the action space, which alter the behaviour of the robots and, consequently, the audible result produced. We intend to demonstrate through the agents, programming of random processes and direct manipulation of this application, that it is possible to generate empathy in interaction and obtain specific audible results, which would be difficult to otherwise reproduce due to the infinite loops that the interaction promotes.Item Filme, fotografia e memória invisível(Relógio d'Água, 2009-10) Gil, InêsThe photographic image, either still or moving, is considered a fair and representative archive of past events, given its mirror nature of reproducing the world. However, in their purely documental function, photography or film do not represent the "tone" of the story that was recorded in the images. But it may be that it is the atmosphere that is expressed through the images that is able to awake memory and turn the story not only into something visible but also into something sensible.Item Lugares Sagrados: Corpo e Sensualidade no Cinema(Faculdade de Belas -Artes, 2009-10) Gil, InêsIn film, Eros manifests itself in the image temporality to wake the sensation up. But the image needs to remain ambiguous to suggest and not to show. In suggesting, it maintains a distance between the body representation and its sensuality. In showing, the image may turn into another genre: the obscene or the pornographic one. That is why Eros has a sacred place in film because it always maintains a veil upon its presentation: the body exteriority and interiority become mystery. It is the filmic "aura" of Eros. Item Drivers and barriers to digital television adoption in Portugal: the perspectives of the TV viewers and other main stakeholders(2011) Quico, Célia; Damásio, Manuel José; Henriques, Sara; Veríssimo, IolandaTo understand what are the most significant factors for digital TV adoption by the Portuguese population in the switchover context is the main goal of the research project here presented. In April 26, 2012, the analogue terrestrial television switchoff is planned to occur in Portugal, according to the schedule published by the national telecommunication regulator Anacom. Digital terrestrial TV was launched in the country in April 2009, making Portugal one of the countries with a more ambitious schedule – or risky, depending on the perspective - for the full transition from analogue to digital terrestrial television. In this paper we will start by presenting the research project’s objectives, theoretical framework and research design. Next, we will present first results of the project focused on the barriers and drivers to digital TV adoption from two of the empirical studies which integrate it, namely, the quantitative inquiry administered to a representative sample of the Portuguese population and interviews with main stakeholders in the area of digital TV in Portugal. The perspectives of the television viewers are compared with other main stakeholders in this process. The paper will be concluded with a brief discussion of these results and a brief enumeration of next steps for the project.
